Homecoming Song by Affaf Tobbala, tells the story of Tat the duckling, and Najlaa the little girl, and recounts the relationship of empathy and solidarity that grows between them and inspires them to live up to the challenges they encounter. The book is divided into three chapters. Tat the duckling is the main protagonist in chapter 1, Najla is the main protagonist in chapter 2, while chapter 3 tells their shared story. The writer uses a new tool that is uncommon in narration. The first two chapters open with the CV of each of the two protagonists, while the third chapter starts with their updated CV. This tool enables the writer to present the necessary background information about the two characters in a concentrated form, opening the way for the actual narration to follow an event-based fast-paced storytelling rhythm. Although its three chapters are all written from the perspective of the omniscient narrator, each has its distinct nature and style that suits the world it tries to depict (the duck's flock, humans in rural Egypt, and the interface between the two worlds). Chapters 1 and 2 tell the story of each of the two main protagonists from within her own world, introducing us to that world and to the peculiar elements of her personality and sharing with us the journey that leads her to the location where the two protagonists meet: around Lake Burullus in northern Egypt. The final chapter combines the two stories and the two worlds of Tat and Naglaa in a joint protagonism, that stimulates the reader's imagination without contradicting his reason. The book tells two parallel stories: the story of a small courageous duckling, that finds herself lonely on Lake Burullus when her broken wing hinders her ability to catch up with her parents and the flock she belongs to, when they had to quickly escape from the hunters' bullets on their route of migration to the warm south; and the story of a little courageous girl, who is deaf and mute, and moves to live with her grandparents in their rural house near the same lake after her parents had to go on a long trip, only to find herself lonely as well, because her grandparents could not communicate with her in sign language, the only means of communication she uses with those around her. After presenting the story of each of the two protagonists in two separate chapters, in the third and last chapter the author braids their two stories in one tale, which recounts their meeting on the banks of the Burullus, and the journey of their friendship, that helps them in finding the strength to face their challenges and achieve their wishes. Najlaa puts her embarrassment with her bad handwriting behind her, and starts communicating with her grandfather in writing, telling him the story of her friendship with the duck, and opening up the opportunity to start, with his help, to cure her wing in order to be able to soar and happily join her parents and her flock as it crosses the sky singing the song of coming home at the end of the migration season. Najla too returns with her parents to her home, but only after equipping herself with new means of communication with others and an increased sense of confidence in her capabilities. Through the parallelism between the stories of the duckling and the girl and the sense of disability that unites them in their determination to overcome it, the book conveys a concept of disability that compares it to any other obstacle that faces any person, which brings it closer to any child's minds, while at the same time stimulating the self-confidence of a disabled child in his ability to engage the world around him. Moreover, the story of Naglaa highlights not what others could do to her, as much as what she could do to be able to save her friend and overcome the obstacles that face her, thus opening the way to receive help from others, and this positive attitude generated by the empathy between the two protagonists is what unleashed their potential. Finally, the quasi-poetic language and the abstract and tender illustrations with pastel and tranquil colors, created an open world fraught with emotion and love, which indirectly asserts the positive link between the reader and the two protagonists, thus enhancing the book's message without being direct or overdramatic.
